The Daniel Barber Interview

Daniel Barber

British director and BAFTA winner Daniel Barber is a force to be reckoned with.

We caught up with him for his take on the movie business and what it's like at the Oscars...

Why did you get involved with VM shorts?
To support up and coming filmmakers.

What makes a great short film?
A great director.

Do you think it's difficult for up and coming film makers to get a break in the UK?

Extremely difficult, but you have to keep trying.

How did you get your first big break?
Directing television commercials allowed me to develop my talent and ultimately allowed me to make my first short film.

What did you make of your Oscar experience earlier this year?
It was quite surreal, but also completely amazing. To meet and have the chance to talk to so many amazing people, including George Clooney, Sharon Stone and John Travolta, to name but a few was great fun. I must work hard and try to get back there again!

Have you ever been tempted to get in front of the camera?

No.

What piece of work are you most proud of and why?
My short film 'The Tonto Woman' - which was the result of a beautiful collaboration, between lots of my talented friends.

What does it take to be an award-winner?

Passion and guts.

How has your advertising work influenced or shaped your work as a short film director?
It has given me the time and space to experiment, play and indulge my passion for the craft of film making.

Who would you most like to work with and why?
Michael Caine - one of the all time greats!
