Yes, the 'rule' is that films have to be 2 and a half minutes. Which is why I first posted a 2 and a half minute of Doodlebug; just search for DOODLEBUG and the shorter version should pop up. Thanks for watching.

Wow. Thank you so very, very much... I'll call you Mr West End! I really don't take the negative comments to heart cos I guessed there were alterior motives for them, and anyhoos I love the process of writing and making films. The real joy is in the doing; the accolades are (very nice!) icing on the cake! (And it is nice to get some r4cognition after all these years of making stuff at home). I'm currently preparing the model for my next short. I was gonna call it Bee Movie, but that title's been taken now, so I might call it Bumble, or Mr Bumble. It'll be about a slob who has to do battle with a bee! Not a serious film with a message, just a kinetic piece of fun! If you'd like to see my work that has a darker edge, I've posted my short film CAMPING here on VMS - it's in three parts.

As someone who has been in the dubbing game for nearly 30 years, nice one! It ticks all the right boxes.
I especially noticed the care on getting the camera angles on the lad so that you never forgot he had been shrunk - he remained below our level. Well, thought out, many film makers miss that kind of detail.
Look forward to the next one!

This was an amazing film-I hope you get somewhere with this film alone ( I've also got a film on this site-yours is my favorite of them all) this film is truly original and exciting. I loved it. The lad in it is a great young actor, the bluescreen is brilliantly done, the soundtrack/effects are spot on and everything else I might have missed but absorbed during my anticipation of wondering what was going to happen next was clearly doing the job-two fold!. Very clever and very well done. The insect hand thing at the end was great-means you now have to make a sequel! great!

Was it you left that comment on my film 'Little Snaps of Horror' or someone using your computer pretending to be you? It's just that having read some of your responses on here you seemed like a decent bloke and not the sort of f*ckwit that would make a statement like the one below. Thought I'd check with you first before deciding whether or not to stoop to your level.
Graham Rathlin.
"Talk about a 30 second idea stretch to two and a half minutes. I´d hit the Jack Daniels again, mate,. I hear smack is cheap these days, too."
Yep - now I've seen the nasty little comment you left for THE CROOK as well, I've decided it definitely is you and not some imposter. Incidently you might be fooling some people on here but you don't fool me. If you're going to assumes different names so as to praise your own films to high heaven at least have the sense to exercise a little restraint.

However, I have never voted for my own film. Like I´m gonna do that over eight thousand times!
It´s funny... I leave a bits of vitriol on a couple of films, and all of a sudden I´ve loads of negative comments.
Hey maybe we´ll all meet up behind Kevin Spacey on the photo shoot?
Hi son.
Don´t pick on Graham. He can´t help it. Yes, the next short film should be a good un. And all made without resorting to wearing a kaftan and sucking up to the local arts council.
Oh bugger. Think I just blew my chances of winning this prize (!!!) - 15K of arts council moolah! I didn´t mean it. I like kaftan´s, piercings and veggie food. Sh%t. I´m a white, middle class working guy. I´m scroooowed!

Graham Rathlingtonwhatsisname says on his whiney profile that he doesn´t really want to win and the competition organisers can stick it. What a mealy mouthed fooker. I REALLY want to win this competition. I´want my talent recognised and I want the opportunity to stretch that talent - i.e. make a feature. I´ve been making films since I was 15. That´s over 20 years experience. Now´s the time. SO move over, brother, I´m comning thru! (So what if people don´t like me. Jim Cameron is an asshole to work for, apparently, but that doesn´t stop ALIENS being the best kick ass sequel ever made!) The spanish receptionist has just locked me in! But I´ll make the flight. Really. I´locked in! Man, I wish i hadn´t got drunk and had a go at Gray and Acteobloke. Danile can´t help his epilepsy, and Gray may have had some bad @#*! in his life to make him hit the bottle. But still. Do you TELL the world about it to advance your career? Man, I´ve got some @#*! I could tell you about my life over the last five years. But I´m not gonna. Cos when it comes down to the wire it´s about the film that counts. DO YOU LIKE MY FILM? The fact I was forced to work for Fagin while i made it has nothing to do with it. We all have to face @#*! in our lives. Deal with it. Anyway, I´m still not over the moon about my conduct (while slightly inebriated) this holiday. But i really do believe that Doodlebug - the two and a half minute version - is great film making ona home budget. And my other stuff is here on the website if you want to look. (Camping being my pride and joy). I just get fooked off by diletantes with over inflated egos. And as a working blokie ive never taken a hand out from the gov in my life. Which is why im not gonna reval my personal life here. it´s the content of the film that should count. not the struggle behind it. I love film, by the way. Even here on hol in mallorca im planning my next one (which is partly shot - im just working out the special effetcs). @#*! im a bit drunk. but this is me looking after my family. making films inbetween the crisis. and i love the process. i love making films. and i like all kinds of films. from withnail and i to star wars. You know, from a filmed stage play like Of Mice and Men (MAlkovich-Sinise) to frickin Austin Powers. I really do adore the medium. And the real joy comes from the doing - from creating something from nuthin. I just hate the whole political thing. like this. and i know i started it, by calling Graham on a few points. god, i´m drunk. Six pints, and the omlette´s just arrived at the table - so my partnet tells me just now. SO better signh off. Really pissed! Be back home in blighty tomorrow. Night. If you liked this your name's probably LEEPY. Should have been called the worst fifty quid monster movie you'll ever see. Think of all the good causes that could have benefitted from that money. What a waste. The fifty smackers could have fed a family in Biafra for a year. Or at least bought them a goat or something. Shame on you. May God forgive you.

You seem to have a thing about Graham Rathlin. I would say it's professional jealousy except you are not a professional and seem to pride yourself in being an amateur. I've just read his profile and it's clear to me that it's a send up. I found his profile funny, as I'm sure it was intended. Perhaps this escaped you somehow?

Wooooh! Touched a nerve there. Never had an arts council grant in my life you thick tosser - wouldn't even know what one looks like. All my films are paid for by ME and no-one else.
Born and bred in North Belfast, brought up on a run-down council estate where shooting was commonplace - I make you look fickin' middle-class, arsehole. So cut the hard done by working class hero crap.
And I've done every @#*!e job you can imagine - real work you deskbound @#*!.
Google you - no, didn't need to. My real name's Grahm Manson by the way. Try googling this: " Graham Manson, Fathers4Justice" if you want more crap to throw at me. At least the next lot might be accurate.
And it's a bit rich telling me to 'FOOK OFF'. You started this @#*!e. If ye can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

And finally (though not necessarily). I've just seen your posting saying that Doodlebug wasn't shortlisted. Which is just fickin' typical - because it's one of the best films on here, regardless of how much it cost. You should enter it everywhere. And this doesn't change anything - you're still a prat.

Wow. I really did have you down wrong. I thought you were a Kaftan wearing arts council suck up!
But you sound kinda... normal! (Apart from the shootings - that's extreme).
Really wish I hadn't hit the bottle on holiday (I'd been clean for six moths previous).
I really don't get your plots, but obviously many people do... so... maybe I should've kept me gob shut. Still, I ranted while pissed and then we went from there, didn't we?
Fathers4justice? I'll look it up. And if you're seperated from your kid/s then seriously, I really do feel for you, cos I've almost been there myself (thru my wife's mental illness) and the thought of losing my son terrified me.
And finally, I'm confused. You LIKE my film?!? @#*!. This is the end of the weirdest correspondence I've ever entered into.

I'm afraid this film did not make the longlist, as claimed here.
The longlisted films were the ones classified by the BBFC: 16 in total.
You can view the list on the BBFC website - www.bbfc.co.uk Go to search and then type 'Virgin Media Shorts' or you can directly to it at the following link:
Hey Thanks CSmith. I thought I was longlisted cos I was asked to send a DVD a few weeks ago. Ho-hum. Didn't even get as far as I thought! Ha-ha. But yes, got 8,000 viewers which I wouldn't have. Plus there's the chance of getting Doodlebug shown on demand TV. So we'll see. Good luck to the finalists.
Graham. I'm glad we had a chat via private e-mail and settled our differences. Thanks for the film festival list. I will get my arse in gear and enter Doodlebug elsewhere. Thanks again. Lee.

Thanks Graham.
I voted for The Black Hole. I think it's the most complete two and a hald min short in the bunch. Very well shot, lit, performed, edited. I guessed the end just a few seconds before it happened, which is good cos it added to the tension. A ghreat idea well executed, in my humble opinion.
Five Bricks - a nice little gag but too slight and I didn't buy the kids performances.
Alienated - really nicely done, Fantastic ending, lovely end credits, too, but the whole 'interview' format is lazy, I think. Lip synch superb. Character reminded me of Sully from Monsters Inc.
The Big Push - minimalist animation (almost like Flash) which I didn't like. Ending obvious. Not for me.
Butterface - I think this is the second best of the bunch, after The Black Hole. Simple idea well executed. But again I think voice over is lazy film making (exceptions for voice overs: Apocalypse now and, can you believe it, Bladerunner the first version!!!) I just think it's a bit easy to juxtapose voice over and action. But, having said that it was poignant, and the ending is great. Just an overdone theme, really, too (wasn't there a Coca Cola advert with a guy on tube escalator that was a lot like this?) Performances were good, but would have been better if they didn't have the voice over to fall back on.
The Calling - you may like this, Graham, cos it's got a supernatural twist, but I thought it was pretentious and had nothing to say. It's really slick an' all... like a Britney Spear video - looks nice but ain't gonna rock your world.
Desires - yeh, nice visual poem, but doesn't really go anywhere.
Elevator - a plain idea, done okay - pay off okay, but not earth shattering.
The Hobbyist - don't get me started on this. It's a nice idea... for a TV sketch... but has no cinematic value. It's clever how they reveal the object the radio controller is, erm, controlling. But really. It looks like the kind of thing someone who's never made a film before would make; they get a good idea and get lucky. You can even hear them, laughing when the guy goes into the lake. Maybe that's the attraction... the whole: the film makers are amateur and are having a lauff while they make it. But really, I'd like to see if they can actually shoot and cut a sequence together.
Little Dinosaurs - cute, could see it on Sesame Street. Nice animation. The pretence of giving story control to the children is a nice, Sesame Street concept, but I don't buy it.
Mind Games - intriguing sci-fi/dystopian idea; animation so-so. Could be the start of a bigger story, but not really satisfying on its own.
What Cassandra saw - too cutesy for me. Didn't get it. And this has the most votes so far - 22%. Eep!
Just want to say Leepy after reading your pissed up comments (well funny), That your film should have been shortlisted, This competition has failed, if they cant spot raw talent (which they were kinda meant to do)they more fool them. But dont worry, enter your film elsewhere, it has massive appeal (how many viewings did you get?). I look forward to seeing more from you.

Even tho this web site has a swear filter, it doesn't recognise the word fanny. Fanny. Fanny. Fanny. And I'm sure i can get away with tannywhacker. And tag nuts. And maybe anal gas. But not big fat cock. Or sloppy axe wound.
My new film is coming along well. It's called Bumbling and it's about two guys who are chased by a bee! Not a deep story, just loads of slapstick from the guys and some special effects work on the bee. The best thing is that, after the knock back of not getting through to the Virgin finals, the joy of making another film has (just about) healed the wound. So I'll be back next year with Bumbling.

The insect hand thing at the end was great-means you now have to make a sequel! great!

You know, from a filmed stage play like Of Mice and Men (MAlkovich-Sinise) to frickin Austin Powers. I really do adore the medium. And the real joy comes from the doing - from creating something from nuthin.
Eep!
Okay, there'e the ramblings from a bitter loser!

Not a deep story, just loads of slapstick from the guys and some special effects work on the bee.
