Fantastic idea, I've been in that position so I can certainly relate. I like how you told the story from both sides. If I have one criticism it's that the ending is a bit confusing. I take it that the man fell down what must be a very deep hole? Why didn't he make any noise on the way down, is he dead? Why didn't the top of the barrier break, did he slip in-between the barrier bars? How did the phone end up behind him, surely it would have gone down the hole too? Why do you even need the phone at the end?

The end seems a bit forced to me, which is a shame because I thought the rest of it was fantastic.

I thought this was funny - liked the dual perspective narrative and it was pacey and atmospheric. I didn't have a problem with the ending personally because it all felt quite slapstick and I didn't worry too much about the logistics!

NIGHTWALKING keys into that theme and experience of urban paranoia that anyone who has lived in a big city will have sooner or later. I myself once escorted, at her request, a girl I didn't know up an isolated road in Hampstead because she was terrified of being attacked - she actually said she hoped I wasn't a rapist myself. Bizarre but true and so this chimed in with me. Even if the ending is abrupt these kinds of encounters generally are. It has my vote!

Excellently chilling & certainly summed up my thoughts from past experiences of taking the short cut home ! Hope the man isn't dead - picking up the phone ringing to his Mum left a further chill, I thought.

Anyone who's been in this situation will sympathise and I found it genuinely surprising and comic at the point when the man's point of view began - a sharp contrast to the menacing atmosphere of the first half. Loved it!

Great - I loved the unexpected ending, and the way it managed to be both comic and chilling without undermining either. I was slightly distracted at the end wondering if the guy was OK/dead... but perhaps that's intentional!

Clever plot, with great atmosphere. The second actor did seem to have a pretty creepy voice, but I guess the unconventional nice guy voice underlines the never judge a book by its cover aspect.

I liked seeing it from both points of view. It's an interesting take on a familiar situation. Perhaps the guy's voice didn't need to sound quite so nerdy. I was intrigued to know if the phone was going to be answered and what would happen when she realised what had happened to the guy so I'm looking forward to the next part.
    Good idea, well executed.

An excellent idea with an open ending that suggests several different continuations. This is interesting enough to keep a certain intrigue, which is quite an accomplishment for a short film... Still, I missed a bit more of thrill to round it up... Now then, the film would not be the same, I mean she would not have turned so unafraid, and she would not have found the mobile ringing... It is just perfect. Daniel Cormack is ready for more.

Great! I am sure both sexes have been in a similar situation...so many can relate to this! I don't agree with first comments. The ending DOES work..your whole point I guess, was that the guy was in more danger than the woman in the end. Also we sometimes worry about things that we shouldn't worry about and ignore the real silly every day issues such as falling down man hole/getting run over by a car. I think its funny and charming.

I've been thinking about the ending of this film for a while, which in itself suggests it's a good film regardless of how I feel about the ending. Stella makes some good points about the ending, but I still think the ending could have been resolved better and still had the same effect. For example rather than fall down a man hole perhaps an attacker comes out of the alley and snatches the man, which would explain how the phone could end up on the floor, and why the woman can't see him. Just an idea, I hope you don't mind me sharing. Still one of the best films on the site.

It was okay, an interesting idea about something that happens to everyone on a regular basis. Especially as the film chose to show both peoples thoughts on the situation. Really dark brooding music too. However nothing in particularly outstanding was on show. I dont understand how some people dont get the ending. It so obvious what happens..... watch it again and see.

I thought the film was extremely well-made, with really good use of camera-work and shadows. Since it's set in London (I guess), I was constantly amazed by how ominous streets (and the film as a whole) appeared to be. London has always made a ominous place in the movies, IMHO. The dual perspective thing I thought was brilliant, as well, just to not make the stalker and stalked seem so one-sided.

I would agree with a few people in saying that the ending could be improved since it just kind of left you hanging without any real resolution.

Personally, i thought this was brilliant. Im in a media class at school and we are trained to understand different naratives within one video. I think this is brilliantly made and it highlights the key aspects of the steriotype thoughts that women may get if a man is walking behind them at night. It seems some didnt enjoy the ending, but i did as it was unexpected. I was waiting for the girl to answer the phone which would have been good, but cutting it of there leaves your imagination to think about what would have happend after

But overall, the filming and editing is great. There is some professional shots in there. For example: 27 seconds in, the low shot of the woman walking. This looks professional, as to a P.O.V shot. Thanks for making this. I loved it. Good Luck in future productions.

I loved it - it's interesting to see both sides of the story. I think it would be nicer to clearly show what happened to the guy in the end - e. g. if he got attacked by someone (which I think he was) that would have been a clear outcome and a perfect twist in the tale - but leaving it to the imagination of the spectator instead was not what one would expect. Nevertheless good work!

didn't like the mans' voice either - no offense to him. Though I guess camp works against the idea that he's a rapist, but I'd have gone with a more threatening appearance so it misleads the viewer. I personally wouldn't feel too intimidated by someone by that appearance, smartly dressed and well groomed and all that.

I watched the film twice! Enjoyed listening to the dialogue of how each of the night walkers were feeling. Its all a matter of perception? Yes, in this day and age the film sends a clear message that some women are afraid to walk alone at night and especially if a man is behind them - fear of what may happen. This could be a good advert for promoting megafones - man shouts: I am just on my way home and dont worry, your not my type!

Wasn't sure at 1st, but the 2 perpectives work great and as a short film it works - Nice atmosphere and the line about calling their mum is great - some people get a sense of humour. Very Good - you can always criticise, but people who do negatively very rarely go out and make films (or decent films)themselves - The film works and budget is not important - you can spend a million pounds and a bad script will kill the film - just check out some recent cinema releases - I hope you do well.

excellent. I thought it as very interesting that you used both sides of view, and I have been in that situation as well. Great movie, and the voices were great. Funny ending, and I'm sure God would agree.

Could have done alot more visually... without the sound it has no menace. I think the voice overs for both actors have let this down, sounds too scripted. And i think she would have heard a man falling down a massive hole in the ground...

the ending should have featured the mother's voice on the other end of the phone, nagging 'Oh, finally you've decided to call me, I havent heard from you for weeks!...For all i know you couldve fallen down a manhole.

( btw, my short is called 'Happiness?'

good film, agree with some about the ending, but your profile makes me feel you have achieved quite a bit, so not really undiscovered.

The quality is great, everything works, but I'd rather see someone with less quality and less achievements get the chance to go through. thought that was the point in the competition

I read the Actaeon Films bio and was really interested to see what someone with a lot of experience would do with such a short format. Unfortunately I don't think much was achieved in this film.

Visually it was very poor, clearly shot on film and well lit but nothing visual happened. Framing was repetitive and editing stale. A big name actress catches the eye but nothing was done with her. The actors were nothing more than props. The film functions more as a radio play with its over use of voiceover.

The script had a couple of funny lines about rapists but apart from that left me wondering what was the point with this film.

Finally I question why someone who has already established himself somewhat needs to enter this competition. This is a scheme set up to help expose hidden talent. Daniel Cormack has clearly had enough opportunities to set up his own production company, have budgets big enough to shoot film instead of digital and to get big names from the entertainment world to be in his films. Despite all this his film is found lacking. Why enter when someone with more talent who has had fewer opportunities needs it more?

"Championing undiscovered talent" is just a tagline and is not meant to be a restrictive criteria. The competition is judged on merit.

Had to laugh at the comment that the prize should go to a film of "less quality". Perhaps they should take the films off the site and simply judge the competition on who can write the biggest sob story of deprivation in their biography section.

yeah it should depend on the story and quality as oppose to anything else. his profile was a bit 'look at me I'm great!' so put me off a bit though.

I really liked it, thought it was clever and funny.
I agree with comments above, the winner should be whichever film the judges think is best/most suitable for the competition. That's the only relevant thing really. The makers of this film have obviously entered the competition because they want to win it, just like everyone else! It's up to the judges to choose the films they like best.

Nice idea, but only held together by the guy's camp voice over. The woman's sense of panic and intimidation just didn't come across, unfortunately. If it had, the film would have been laugh-out-loud funny, but as it was, it only raised a slight chuckle from me.

I think the first part of the film show promise and is successful in what it sets out to achieve. The second half with the man's inner monologue was not successful and that drastically diminishes what should have been an interesting short. The man's section was terribly paced and the short duration suddenly begins to feel to long. The second section was in dire need of some brutal editing and it felt like you included all of what he said because it was in the script, instead of what would be most effective and necessary. The ending was definitely rushed and quite implausible for obvious reasons that i won't go into. Nicely shot and lit, but with the significant CV that you've posted in your profile, that is the least that should be expected from a 'professional'. The content should have been far more mature and accomplished considering the ostentatious, essay you've written for your profile. I hope you can appreciate my critique from one essay writer to another.

I've seen this film a couple of times (online and at screenings) and it keeps making me smile. It's such a simple and effective premise with a great little twist at the end. It's nice to see a short film that really embraces the short format, i.e. this story is meant to be told in a few minutes. I think it's a real affirmation of short films in their own right.

Yes, this is all well and good. But you do realise this competition is for amatuers? Why dont you let other film makers get discovered and raise the bar a bit. Its all well and good having your film in this competition with your big budgets etc.Why not give budding film makers who have good ideas but no budget shine for a moment and possibly get a minute of fame. It is a good film but it should be entered into a more suitable category of festival. I hope the judges take this into consideration when completing the short list.

Why do you think the competition is only for amatuers? The rules say ANYONE can enter if they or over 18 and live in the UK. If a professional is happy to give the rights of their film away to Virgin Media for no money, then they can't be that successful. MARYTAO you sound bitter to me.

Saw a similiar but much funnier and cleverer Dave Allan sketch in the 70s. A typically weak idea that to my mind wasn't even worth shooting.

However this will reach the final stages because this is just the sort the sort of thing the UK film council think is wonderful and because of your CV ( despite all the claptrap about 'undiscovered talent'). I would nearly put money on it.

I know that your film has been on the website for quite a long time, but I would like to know how you got so many viewers.

By comparison to the other filmmakers the viewing numbers certainly dwarfs the competition. Is it fair to say that this short may be part of a larger film?

A nice sketch idea for TV that wasn´t fully realised. To spend X thousand, with a huge crew, and great investment in time, is ridiculous. It´s the most expensive TV skit in history.

Uncinematic. Moonshot is a TV piece, a sketch at best. So is Moonshot and Tripswitch.

And your biog?!? Jesus. I grew up in a pig sty with a one armed scarewcros for a mother. Does that amke me the better film maker? Puke. And... relax.

I was conceived in a dockside brothel, the son of either a pig farmer or a continental trucker. I grew up in a pig stye with a one armed scarecrow as a mother. I contracted syphilis aged seven and had to have a prosthetic penis, made from a pig´s leg. The procedure took seven years, and this was BEFORE anaesthetic was invented. My dentist, who´s also my surgeon, has just found a conjoined twin growing inside my head, which will be removed later this year.
